Segregation is among the most important and most pervasive issues in urban social geography. The dimensions of segregation are complex, ranging from socio-economic to ethnic, racial, and religious differentiation.
For this assignment, in a small group (of 4 students) you will research and explore the dimensions of segregation for a city of your choice. The aspects of segregation you can (and wish to) explore for your city are highly variable. You may choose to focus on exploring the causes, or the consequences, of segregation, and at the same time you may choose to focus on interpreting previous research, or on conducting your own research.
The end product of your group effort, however, will not be the traditional form of research dissemination (term paper). Instead, your group will contribute to a wiki. What is a wiki you ask? Well, most of you are likely familiar with the most famous wiki, namely Wikipedia. Essentially, a wiki is a website (or similar online resource) which allows users to add and edit content collectively. Users can easily add, remove, and otherwise edit and change content on the site. The ease of interaction and operation makes a wiki an effective tool for mass collaborative authoring (i.e. group collaboration).
We have established a wiki site for this course and you will be given a password to join (this gives you the power to read and contribute to the wiki project). The wiki will be organized such that each group (or each city) has a unique page. Group members will collectively add material to the site, and eventually end up with a “written document” which represents all that your group has learned about segregation for your selected city. In the wiki, you can add text, photos, videos, etc., in other words anything that will help you convey your understanding of the topic.
There is no start date for this assignment other than a “page” (or chapter) will be added to the wiki site on Feb 6th for your city. At such time, you may begin adding material to your site. You may continue to add things (weblinks, photos, data, maps, etc.), and write your text up to April 7th (4:00pm).
The deadline for contributing to your Wiki is April 7th (4:00pm). As this is a group assignment, and nothing is to be “submitted”, neither the late penalty nor submission policies apply for the assignment.
Whether writing a student essay or creating a webpage, the same rules apply when it comes to respecting the intellectual property and creations of others.
The basic rule is that you can only use other people’s copyright (maps, text, images etc.) if what you are doing is a fair dealing for the purpose of research, private study, criticism or review. This means that you can only use other people’s material for the purpose of this project if the way you use it is "fair" (see the guidelines below).
In order to ensure that you don’t infringe copyright, you must comply with the following guidelines:
1. Limit copying where possible
You should only copy as much of a work as is necessary for your purpose. For example, don’t copy an entire map if all you need is a section, and don’t copy an entire page if all you need is a paragraph. Ideally, you should only be copying insubstantial portions of a work.
2. Consider alternatives
Where you can achieve your purpose without copying the work, you should do so. For example, consider linking to a webpage instead of copying the information, or write your own commentary instead of copying someone else’s.
3. Give credit
If you use words, images or maps from a publication (either paper or digital), you must provide an acknowledgement of the original source, in the form of a proper citation which, at the least, must include the name of the author, the source and the copyright owner. If you scan images, photographs, diagrams or maps, you must provide the same acknowledgement of the original source.
4. Stick to your purpose
If you copy a work for the purpose of this project, don’t use it for any other ulterior purposes. In no circumstances should you use other people’s copyrighted material for non-research or commercial purposes.
Making Links to e-Journals
Many journals are available for student use under educational licenses. You are welcome to download a copy of an article from these journals for your own use, but it is not okay to download full text for anyone else.
If you can get to a journal article by Googling, then it's okay to put the full text or an ordinary URL link to that article in your wiki References.
If you can get to the a journal article through the Library's webpages (electronic indexes or the Library catalogue), then it is best to assume that it is restricted by an educational license. In this case, you should make a link that requires a McMaster id in order to get to the full text.

When you create a new page, please make it a sub-section of your city's wiki. There are lots of pages called "Introduction". To avoid confusion, your page should be called "yourcity.Introduction". And then you probably want to provide link text so you don't see the part before the dot.
Here's an example of the coding:
[[Rome.Introduction | Introduction]] creates a new page called Rome.Introduction but displays only the word Introduction as the link.
Making Internal Links
To link to something that is on the same wiki page:
- create a Target at the position on the page to which you want the user to jump
- type the code [[#Top]] - this text will be invisible
- then create the link that jumps to that spot
- type the code [[#Top | Top ]] - the text after the pipe | will be visible and will link to the Target
- see the jump index at the top of this page as an example
To link to something that is on another wiki page:

There have been several questions about text disappearing when a new page is created. The problem is caused when several people make a new page with the same name. Please check out the Wiki Tips section on this Home Page for a hint on how to avoid this.
